Movie Review
Chanakya is a meandering drama that seems confused about whether it wants to be a spy-thriller that takes itself way too seriously or a commercial drama that has a little bit of everything. It falls somewhere in between, neither keeping you on the edge-of-the-seat nor entertaining you. It’s good that Thiru made his Telugu debut, if only he had better material beyond what seems like a mix of every Indian spy film ever made.
The three songs by Vishal Chandrasekhar and Sricharan Pakala pop up at the most inopportune moments and the cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy, editing by Marthand K Venkatesh fail to bring the film together. Abburi Ravi’s dialogues and Sricharan Pakala’s BGM try. The only ones who seem earnest about the film are Gopichand, Mehreen Pirzada and Zareen Khan, giving it their all and trying to make the shoddy material work.
By the time Gopichand’s Arjun reveals in a throwaway dialogue why in the world the film is named Chanakya, the sigh that escapes one’s lips is not of surprise but sheer exhaustion.Go watch this one at your own risk!
