Mahanati is an Indian bilingual biographical film. Nag Ashwin has directed the film. Priyanka Dutt has produced the film under the banners Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema. The film was simultaneously filmed in Telugu and Tamil. The film was later Titled as Nadigaiyar Thilagam. There are cast like Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan in lead roles. Samantha Akkineni, Vijay Devarakonda, Rajendra Prasad, Prakash Raj, Bhanupriya and Shalini Pandey appear in supporting roles. Mahanati is set to be dubbed in Hindi.
The film is based on the life of Indian actress Savitri. Popular young actress Savitri in Bangalore, India, is lying unconscious with her young son and hospitalized, spending a year in a coma. The incident garnered heavy media attention, but Savitri’s early life and whereabouts are unknown to the public. A newspaper editor hired Madhurvani, a stammering journalist, and Vijay Anthony, a photographer to write a memoir on Savitri.
Madhurvani retrieves a letter written by Savitri, in which she wants to take her son to a Shankaracharya. Madhuravani continues her research even after her editor is relieved to write a memoir, and is savored at Savitri’s house, listening to her aunt’s childhood.
In 1942, Vijayawada, a widow Subhadramma and her daughter Savitri to Subhadramma’s sister, Durgamba and husband. V. Chaudhary took over, which was enough for the latter’s charging. Magan, Savitri, and Susheela became best friends in speech, thought and action. She becomes a skilled dancer and later makes a profit for Chaudhary by acting in plays with Susheela. On one such occasion, he is praised for his performance by Bollywood actor Prithviraj Kapoor.
The increasing popularity of cinema reduces the presence of plays and Chaudhary suffers heavy losses. He tries to get Savitri to join the film industry centered in Madras, but his young age and inability to speak Tamil hamper his chances. However, she succeeds in meeting Ramasamy “Gemini” Ganesan, who works in the casting department and has her picture taken for a casting director.
A year later, a director arrives at the directory and wants to launch Savitri, but that dialogue goes wrong and is thrown out. However, she successfully plays a part in a film song, and her distinctive performance helps her get lead roles.
Savitri is offered the role of Ganesan as an actor, and she teaches him the Tamil language. The two actors together become superstars and Savitri falls in love with the married Ganesan. They secretly marry, causing a clash with Savitri’s family. Reluctant to act in films after marriage, Savitri gives filmmakers and Ganesan the persuasion, and the films are successful.
Savitri gives birth to two children – a girl and a boy. Early in her career, Ganesan, an assistant, begins to get jealous, Savitri’s fame starts with her and she starts consuming alcohol. Savitri tries to stop him, but Ganesan shares him instead of drinking.
Some women urged Savitri to be both a direct and a star in a female cast and crew film. On the day of the release of her film, Savitri along with another woman finds Ganesan in her guesthouse. Feeling deceived, she angrily refuses to talk to him and kicks him out of her house.
Savitri becomes an alcoholic, and also adds weight. Meanwhile, her mother dies, and poor financial decisions lead to raids by the Income Tax Department, causing damage to her property. One day, Savitri, along with her daughter, consumes her excessive alcohol and faints, accidentally sets her house on fire. He finds out that Savitri has diabetes.
Chaudhary meets Savitri, and he apologizes to both his daughter and uncle and marries his daughter. Savitri gave up drinking and lost weight. She lives in a small house with her son and starts acting in low budget films. invests money separately to open a rehabilitation center but realizes that she still has income tax dues, strongly refusing to participate with any more money.
She goes to Bangalore the next day with her son; When lost, she calls Ganesan but cuts the line before speaking. Angry with him and himself, before falling into a coma, he is inebriated again.
Madhuriwani realizes her love for Anthony through Savitri’s story. She interrupts what is Anthony’s engagement and speaks convincingly without saying anything, but she realizes that it is her sister’s engagement and that Anthony loves her. Madhuravani writes memoirs about Savitri and goes to Komavati Savitri, and holds in her hands a picture of her father, taken from a newspaper archive. The film shows Savitri’s death in December 1981.
