Movie Review
Critic’s Rating: 2.5/5
Kanithan’s director TN Santosh is a former assistant to AR Murugadoss. Surprising that the film matches his master’s films. The plot outline – the protagonist tries to find the identity of the villain, even the villain trying to track him down – is similar to the one in Thuppakki; A point about the presence of villainous men across the state takes Raman into account. Where he was the hero who had eyes everywhere;
There is even a scene where the protagonist is seen downstairs as he speaks broken English, which echoes in a scene from 7aum Arivu, where the heroine calls a group of men to make derogatory remarks on Tamil Explodes. And the director is quite competent and the visuals are slow (thanks to cinematographer Arvind Krishna) The film manages to be catchy for the time being.
The middle part of the film is a ritual thriller. Gautam Ramalingam a reporter, gets arrested for fraud. He learns that he has fallen victim to a fake degree certificate racket. He decides to track down the person responsible for stealing the identity and ruining the lives of many youngsters like him. Meanwhile, Thura Sarkar, who leads the racket, realizes that someone is behind him. And decides to find out who that person is and eliminate him. There are tense action scenes, melodramatic but effective emotional scenes, and the plot keeps moving at such a rapid pace that we don’t have time to make many jumps of logic.
But, when viewed as a whole, Kanithan seems less than the sum of its parts. The main reason is scenes that act as a filler between actions, which are either normal or prolonged or both. The film takes a little time to go and about 30 minutes are wasted through pointless scenes in the name of establishing the character of the hero and his romance. Even the film feels as if Bala gets time to do his shift. Conversely, you just have to think of another film from another assistant of Murugadoss – Anand Shankar, which Arima Nambi plotted in half this time.
There are also times when the characters never hear of common sense – the hero deliberately puts people in mortal danger; First, his lawyer friend, and later, a colleague, even though he loses people due to this attitude! And the heroine is, who contributes to the plot only when she gets a chance to prove her flaws as a Tamil film heroine, Who foolishly runs into the villain’s den and gets caught.
You could have defended such scenes at least as the first time. But how do you explain the 15-minute stretch in the second half when the film goes dead in its tracks to include scenes from the protagonist . Discuss drinking alcohol with his friends through a crutch-worthy ‘romantic’ scene and a song? This, at a time when the characters are still not out of their problem and some of their lives, maybe in danger! Did no one in the unit point this out? Not even the editor (ironically, it is Bhuvan Srinivasan, who was also the editor of Arima Nambi)?
The segment proves to be just as deadly for the film as it was for Kryptonite Superman until then, it seemed to have a thrilling finish after a shaky start. The script gets tense and the film never gets made despite trying to regain lost ground.
